Gastric sleeve health insurance prices
Private health insurance is recommended so you don’t have to bear the brunt of the majority costs. While insurance can cover a substantial portion of your surgical expenses, please remember that elective procedures still incur out-of-pocket costs, which will vary based on your individual medical circumstances.
Insured procedure– gastric sleeve cost is around $7,500*
Gastric Sleeve Care Package Fee: $6,900
This includes:
- Surgeon
- Surgical Assistant
- Follow-up care with Dr. Reza Adib
- Dietitian program post-op
Additional fees to consider:
- Initial Dietitian Consultation: $160 (usually claimable through health fund extras cover)
- Anaesthetist for the procedure: Approximately $500
- Hospital Excess
- Pathology and Radiology
Coverage: are you sure you have gastric sleeve health insurance?
Please be aware that some of the more basic private health coverage plans, like extras-only cover, may exclude weight loss surgeries. To confirm your coverage, call your private insurer and quote the Medicare item number for Sleeve Gastrectomy: Item no. 31575 to them.
Having private insurance is strongly recommended, as unforeseen complications or additional procedures would be absorbed by the health fund, should they be necessary during the surgery
Be aware that if you’ve recently enrolled in a health fund, a standard 12-month waiting period usually applies, and bariatric surgery is not considered to be a cosmetic procedure.

Uninsured procedure – gastric sleeve cost total: $21,560*
Surgeon Care Package Fee: $7,900
This package includes:

Additional fees to consider:
- Initial Dietitian Consultation: $160 (includes Dietitian program post-op)
- Anaesthetist: Approximately $1,500
- Wesley Hospital Fees: Approximately $12,000

These fees are based on a single item number and assumes no complications during the procedure, also subject to any changes directly from Wesley Hospital.
Accessing Superannuation if uninsured:
We understand that every journey is unique, and for those without insurance, there are options. Patients may access their Superannuation or a family member’s Superannuation to cover these expenses.
